Do sleep masks actually work?

Does wearing a sleep mask actually improve sleep, and how much of the research applies at home?

Yes, better than most sleep products. Randomized trials find eye masks improve sleep quality and measurably raise melatonin, because eyelids do not block much light. The catch is that most of those trials ran in hospitals, where the baseline is terrible — at home the effect depends on how much light your room already has.

What the trials found

Eye masks are unusual in this category: there are randomized controlled trials, and they point the same way. Studies in intensive care and coronary care units report significantly better sleep quality with eye masks, improvements in depth of sleep, falling asleep, and getting back to sleep after waking, and — importantly — a measurable difference in melatonin levels between mask and control groups.

The mechanism is not mysterious. Light suppresses melatonin, your eyelids are thin, and blocking light at the eye raises melatonin. That is a physical effect, not a preference.

The honest caveat

Almost all of that research was done on hospital patients, where the baseline is a lit ward, monitors, and staff moving at night. Their rooms are far worse than yours, so their improvement is larger than yours will be.

At home, the honest version is: the darker your room already is, the less a mask will do. If you have blackout curtains, no electronics, and a partner who sleeps when you do, you may notice very little. If your room has a charger LED, a hallway strip under the door, a partner's phone, or an early sunrise in June, a mask is the cheapest fix available.

The objections, answered straight

"It leaves creases." A flat mask pressed against your face for eight hours can. That is the specific problem a contoured shell exists to solve: the contour sleep mask rests on the brow and cheekbone, and nothing presses on the eyelid or the skin around the eye.

"It dries my eyes." Pressure and rubbing on the eyelid are what cause that, not darkness. Same fix — the molded cups leave space, and you can open your eyes inside the mask. There is more to this one than fits here, including the case where a mask is the treatment rather than the cause, and where ours is the wrong tool: can a sleep mask cause dry eyes or a stye.

"I sleep on my side." This is where flat masks fail most often, because the pillow presses the fabric into your eye. A contoured mask has a rigid enough shell that the pillow presses on the shell instead.

"It slips off." Usually a strap problem rather than a mask problem. Adjust it so it sits without tension — a mask tight enough to leave a mark is tight enough to wake you.

Where it sits against everything else

Of the three levers that change a night — light, temperature, and a repeated cue — light is the strongest and the fastest, and a mask is the cheapest way to pull it. It costs a fraction of blackout curtains, it travels, and it works the first night.

Scent is third on that list, and we say so on the sleep guide even though we sell it. If you want both, the ritual sets pair the mask with a diffuser.

Questions people ask next

Do sleep masks actually improve sleep quality?

In randomized trials, yes — better sleep quality scores and measurably higher melatonin compared with controls. Most of those trials ran in hospital wards, where light and noise are far worse than a bedroom, so expect a smaller effect at home than the studies show.

Can a sleep mask cause wrinkles?

A flat mask pressed into the skin for hours can crease it. A contoured shell rests on the brow and cheekbone and does not press on the skin around the eye, which is what the shape is for.

Can a sleep mask cause dry eyes?

Pressure and rubbing on the eyelid cause that, not the darkness. A molded mask leaves space over the eye — you can open your eyes inside it — so nothing rubs the lid or the lashes.

Are sleep masks good for side sleepers?

Contoured ones are. A flat mask fails on your side because the pillow presses fabric into the eye; a rigid shell takes that pressure instead.

Is a mask better than blackout curtains?

On cost and coverage, usually. Curtains miss the charger LED, the hallway strip and a partner's screen, and they do not travel. Curtains win only if you cannot stand anything on your face.

How do I wash it?

Spot clean and air dry. No machine wash.
